My "run a CCFL on 1 battery and a 2 transistor inverter" experiment was a success! For this project, I used one inverter transformer and a CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) from an old LCD monitor. The 2 transistors are NPN, type BD737 from a (very old) old cassette player. The 2 resistors are 82 Ohm (grey-red-black) and 1/4th Watt. I think almost any NPN transistor in this package should do the job. It has a BCE pin-out. On a full 9 volt battery, I got around 750Volt but the battery was draining fast. For the schematic diagram I used this one: www.eleccircuit.com

That is kind of a safety reason, if there is the electric current from the panels coming in the electric grid then Xcel Energy happens to be working on the grid they could potential get shocked. And there are some other reasons...mainly that is a safety issue. A battery backup system would be a way to get around that and have reserved electricity for when the grid goes down. SolarDave: You guys (Standard Renewable Energy) don't do that many battery system installs? I wanted a method to always keep my batteries fully charged and have the means to be able to reach full float voltage of 27.6vdc and then dump automatically to the grid and sell power until the batteries get down to about 26vdc. I was able to do this automatically by using a wind charge controller with dump load circuit and a 200 Amp battery isolator relay. The charge controller is adjustable so I can set at what voltage I want to dump the excess power (27.6vdc) and thus keep the panels always making power and pushing it to the batteries and grid. This happens now unattended in an automatic fashion and it is inexpensive and easy to do. With this design, my batteries are always fully charged and never "cycle" so they will last years and have full power when needed. The charge controller is from Coleman Air and the battery isolator relay I got from Amazon. I get questions all the time about how much it costs to do something similar, so here it s. For just the solar you can do the same 4KW system for about 000 if you buy the components and do the labor yourself.
